Analysis of Rock Video 2

Maroon 5 - If I never see your face again

Mise en scene:

The video is set in a house, with red walls with blue accents. The house used for the setting looks very modern and expensive/ of wealth and creates a slick atmosphere. When creating my own music video this is a great low budget idea; as its easy to film in someones well furnished house and the final product looks sleek. The use of red creates a sexy sleek feel. The bands instruments are present in most shots this is to show that they are 'true musicians' this is typical in bands of this genre as they are reflecting they are all about the music. The costumes are very formal and create a smart feel; all band mates are wearing suits, and artist Rihanna is dressed in a series of different costumes that are all quite provocative; this is typical of this artist as she is usually sexulised; this is typical of a pop artist.

The video uses high key lighting throughout; the use of this lighting makes the setting seem bright, this is not typical of the genre as usually dark colors are used in rock videos; however this video is rock pop.I will implement high key lighting in my own video as it effectively and easily can create an upbeat atmosphere and emphasis bright colors  These are all conventions of a pop video which we shall meet.

Editing:

A series of quick cuts and jump cuts are used this creates a fast paced atmosphere for the video making it seem more exciting. The technique of shot reverse shot is used when Rihanna is shown looking at a subject who is off screen and then the band are shown looking back at Rihanna. This makes the audience unconsciously assume both artist are looking at each other at this point it reflects the lyrics when they smile ans sing about never seeing each others face again but still longing after each other. This creates a sense of sexual tension and mystery.

Cinematography:
A wide range of close ups are used to show both of the artists lip syncing and show their emotions. Furthermore close ups are used of the bands instruments again to reinforce the band is all about the music and are authentic musicians. The use of low angles are used to create a sexy feel and make the video look dynamic and non repetitive. Over the shoulder shots are used this allows the audience to see the seen from a different perspective and made the audience feel like they were spying on the subjects - Rihanna and the band.

There is no narrative in the video just a concept of ' saying goodbye' this is clear to the audience. For our video we are going to use a simple concept instead of creating a intricate story line which would not be conventional for a pop video.

Analysis of Pop Video 1

The video is based on a concept of being indecisiveness and how it effects people around you the song explains this lyrically. It is conventional for a music video to have a basic concept that is portrayed through shots than to be a narrative.

A obvious convention is that the artist appears in the video and that the song will be the soundtrack of the video this convention is usually used as it promotes not only the artist but also their brand  this is a promotional video as it shows the artist. Moreover the artist lip sync's along with lyrics whiles performing dancing or gesturing.

The first location of the video is a wedding chapel where the artist gestures with the prop of flowers, this connotates she is fed up with her '' fiance'' not making his mind up. In this shot we are introduced to her first costume which is wedding dress this is conventional as its typical for the costumes to match the locations and later in the video when the location changes the costumes do to.

Here is when the artist is chasing after her '' fiance'' with rage.
Here the artist is wearing a provocative wedding dress as its very short at the front and low cut at the front, this is what we would expect the artist to wear. Most Pop artists are often represented as sex symbols. When looking at her performance in this part of the video she has open body language this connotates she has a strong personality this reflects her brand image. I like this aspect of the video as it shows how women are independant most female artist try to represent themselves similar to this. This is a good example of a music video element as its conventional for the artist to change costumes depending on location.

This is conventional as when the location changed the artist changed her costume. In addition to this when looking at the costume in this shot again its very short reflecting a sexy feel. This section of the video would of been filmed in the studio, the use of red light creates a intimate atmosphere and connotates heartbreak, lust and also danger. As the artist almost wants to get revenge on the subject ( fiance) In this shot there is a range of camera movements to create a dynamic look and reflect energy. This is done by the use of whip pans, tracks and pans. Interestingly we can see a clear promotional method as the artist is wearing designer glasses and a close up is then focused on the brand for the audience to see.

The last location is in the street; again the artist's costume changed so the audience are aware the artist is in a another setting.
The video uses a range of close ups so the audience can make a connection with the audience can connect with the artist. Furthermore the video consists of mostly close ups of the artist lip syncing with mid shots of the artist performance.
